Fairground History

Days gone by

People have been holding fairs for thousands of years. But before 1830, fairs were not like the ones you might visit today. Early fairs were meetings of people from different areas who gathered together in one place to trade. The earliest fairs we know about were held in Stone Age times. People gathered on hilltops to exchange tools etc. In a modern fairground. Many of the rides and stalls have not changed a great deal in the last 100 years. The rides are the parts of the fair which have changed most in the last 150 years. The first roundabouts had to be light and small because they were worked by hand by a person turning a hand crank. The roundabouts also had to be small enough to be carried on carts drawn by horses. By the turn of the century the introduction of steam-powered traction engines meant that roundabouts could be much larger and heavier. Music is very important at a Fairground as it attracts people to the fair and it also lets people know that the rides are open and up for business. Music is also there to cover up the noises made from the rides.
